Mercy stood at the back with her arms folded, which she was aware looked like a statement and was not one, and could not make a sound come out.
It was a good night. She wants that said. Nine hundred people, a room with the lights up at the end, somebody's testimony that was genuinely wonderful, and a song that everybody in that building except her seemed to be able to sing.
She had been at the hospital until three. Her mother is at the stage where nights are the hard part.
And she stood at the back and looked at all those faces and could not get her mouth to work, and then she did the thing that made the evening worse, which was that she started to watch herself not singing.
She said afterwards that she has never felt further outside anything in her life, and that the specific misery of it was that she was not angry at any of them, and there was nobody to blame, and she would have given anything to be able to do what nine hundred people were doing effortlessly.
She left before the end, which she felt bad about, and she sat in her car in a multi-story and put her hands on the wheel.
A woman she vaguely knows from the row in front had followed her out, not because she had noticed anything, but because she was parked two spaces away and was leaving too.
She knocked on the window. Mercy put it down.
The woman said, "You look like I felt at Christmas."
Mercy said something polite.
And the woman said, "I couldn't sing for about four months, love. Not a note. And I sat in this exact parking lot and worked out that the invitation isn't addressed to the people who can sing."
Then she got in her car and drove off, and Mercy sat there for another ten minutes.
You may have stood at the back of something and been unable to produce whatever it was everybody else was producing. In a room, in a service, at a family occasion, in your own front room. And the second layer of it, the watching yourself fail to do it, is worse than the first. And nobody has ever told you who the invitation is actually addressed to.

Read The Address On The Envelope
There is a sentence of Jesus that has been on more walls and mugs than almost anything else He said, and the first half of it is usually the half people skip.
"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."Matthew 11:28
All ye that labor and are heavy laden.
That is not decoration. That is the address on the envelope. He names, specifically, the people He is talking to, and the people He names are the ones who are worn out and carrying something.
Not the ones with capacity. Not the ones who can sing. Not the ones who arrived with something to give. The qualification He states is being tired and loaded up, which is exactly the state that makes a person feel they should not have come.
You are named in the address line of that invitation rather than excluded by it. Matthew 11 lists exhaustion as the qualifying condition, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a sentence off a thousand mugs and puts it back where it belongs, which is in a multi-story parking lot at half nine at night.
And notice what is promised at the end of it. Rest. Not energy. Not the ability to join in. He does not offer to make her able to sing. He offers the thing a woman who has been at a hospital until three actually needs.
You have been offered exactly what you are short of rather than what you could not produce. That is what the written word says the invitation contains, and it is the Spirit of God who makes that arrive as being seen rather than as a familiar quotation.
The Second Layer Is Not Yours To Carry Either
Now the part that this article is really about, because the first layer is not usually the problem.
The first layer is that you are tired and cannot do the thing. That is just a fact and it will pass or it will not.
The second layer is watching yourself not do it. Standing at the back and observing your own failure to participate and drawing conclusions from it about where you stand with God. That is the part that does the damage, and it is entirely made up.
Because nothing in that room was measuring her. There was no reading being taken. Nine hundred people singing is a lovely thing and it is not an instrument, and Mercy's silence was not registering anywhere as a result.
You were not being assessed at the back of that room. It is written that the Lord does not see as man sees, which cuts the ground out from under a person conducting an inspection of themselves through other people's eyes, and His Spirit is the one who was standing at the back with her the whole time.
And say the guard, because this is exactly where a kind word turns into a task. Nothing on this page asks anything of you. No participation, no feeling, no words, no proportion of anything, and nothing routed to any person or work anywhere at all. If the next four months are silent, you are exactly as much His through every one of them, that is the written shape of it, and the Holy Spirit is the one keeping this from becoming one more standard for somebody who is already at a hospital until three.
Something can loosen here, in a car or at the back of a room, and it costs you nothing at all.
You are not outside the thing. Scripture addresses the invitation by name to the ones who are worn out and carrying something, and the Holy Spirit is the one making that read as being named rather than as a verse off a mug.
Two things this is not. It is not the start of a scheme and there is no second part waiting behind it. And it is not a promise that you can sing next week, because the woman two spaces away could not for four months and the invitation held for every one of them, and what God does in your circumstances is His to decide.
You have been invited by the exact description of the state you are in. That is written, and His Spirit was at the back of that room with you the whole evening.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, sitting in the car if that is where you are. The standing to speak to God like this is yours in Christ and does not depend on what you were able to produce tonight, Scripture is the ground under it, and the Holy Spirit was at the back of that room with you. What He does next in your circumstances is His to decide, and none of these lines is a lever.
- Room full of people singing that I could not join in with, you were never a test I failed. The word of God says come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and that is the address on the envelope rather than decoration. I am the one being spoken to and I am taking it as addressed.
- Second layer of watching myself not manage it, get out of this car, because there was no reading being taken in that building at any point. In the name of Jesus I put you down in the stairwell, since what is written says the Lord does not see as man sees. His Spirit was standing at the back with me for the whole of it.
- Father, You were in that room and in this parking lot and You were at the hospital until three as well. Your word says I will give you rest, which is the thing I am actually short of rather than the thing I could not do. Come unto me, You said, and I am glad to say so out loud.
