He Was In That Place The Whole Time

This message is for the woman who farmed the same forty acres her whole life and only found the spring in the top field at seventy-one, and who has to work out what it means that it was running the entire time

Ruth found the spring the summer she turned seventy-one, which is a strange age to find anything on land you were born on.

It was the dry year. The top field had gone the color of a paper bag and the ewes had worn a path to the gate, and she went up in the evening because she could not sleep, and she noticed that in one corner, under the thorn, the grass had stayed green.

She stood and looked at it for a while. Then she got down on her knees, which took a moment at seventy-one, and pushed her hand into the base of the thorn and it came out wet to the wrist.

Her granddaughter Maud was staying that week. Ruth walked back down and got her and a spade and they went up in the last of the light.

It was under about eighteen inches. Clean, cold, coming up steady out of a seam in the rock, and it had been coming up steady out of that seam for longer than anybody in that family had been alive.

Maud, who is twenty-four and kind, said the obvious thing. "Grandma. Did you not know?"

And Ruth sat back on her heels in the wet grass and did the arithmetic, and the arithmetic was this. She had hauled water up to that field in the dry summers of 1976 and 1995 and 2018. She had cursed that corner for being thin ground. She had priced a trough and a pipe run twice and not done it because of what it would cost.

Forty-odd years of carrying water up a hill, past a spring, in the dark.

She was not angry. That is the part Maud remembered later. Ruth sat there with her hand in the water and she laughed, and then she went quiet, and then she said something Maud has never forgotten.

"It never stopped, though. All them years I was carrying. It never once stopped running."

They put a stone round it that autumn. Not for the sheep, really. Ruth said she wanted to be able to see where it was from the gate.

You have been carrying water up a hill. Somewhere along the line the subject of God became a subject of effort and arrears for you, of what you have not managed and what you still owe, and in all those summers nobody ever walked you up to the corner under the thorn and told you what has been running under your own ground the entire time.

He Was In That Place The Whole Time

The Sentence A Man Said When He Woke Up

There is a man in Genesis who fell asleep on a stone because he had nowhere better, and he was not a good man that week. He had cheated his brother and he was running.

He dreams. There is a stairway with traffic on it, and God stands over him and does every single bit of the talking. No conditions. No arrears named. And then Jacob wakes up and says the sentence this whole page is built on.

"And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the LORD is in this place; and I knew it not."Genesis 28:16

Hear what that sentence is not. It is not "God has arrived". It is not "God came because I finally did something". It is a man finding out that the ground he had thrown himself down on in the dark, thinking it was nothing, was not nothing, and had never been nothing.

You have been sleeping on that stone, and the place was never as empty as it felt. Genesis 28 puts God in that field before Jacob knew a thing about it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a sentence spoken at dawn by a man on the run and puts it down inside somebody carrying water in a dry year.

And look what Jacob does next, because it is the whole shape of what this site is about. He does not pay anything. He takes the stone he had used as a pillow, stands it up, and gives the place a name. He marks it. He makes the thing he had walked over into a thing he can see from the gate.

You were given a memory and a mouth, and marking where God already was is not a payment of any kind. That is written all through Scripture in stones and heaps and names, and it is the Spirit of God who brings a person back round to a corner of their own life and shows them the grass that stayed green.

What Was Running While You Were Carrying

Let me say the plain thing, the way it would get said at a kitchen table.

Finding out you were carrying water past a spring is not a rebuke. Ruth did not go home ashamed. She went home lighter, because eighteen inches under thorn is not something a person is supposed to see, and the spring had never once been withheld from her. It was simply there, and one dry evening she was shown.

That matters, because this subject gets handed to people as an accusation nearly every time. You should have. You never. Look at the years. And the sentence at Bethel goes the other way round entirely: I knew it not, says the man, and God does not correct him, and God does not fine him for the years he did not know.

You have not been failing an examination you were never entered for. The written word has a running man wake up on a stone and get a promise instead of a reckoning, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps that from being read as a near miss.

And here is the guard, because a good thing curdles exactly here. Nothing is being asked of you on this page. No amount, no proportion, no practice, no schedule, nothing routed to anybody at all. There is no requirement in this and there is no next step behind it. You are as fully His this evening as you would be after any act you could think of putting on the end of this, and that is not a soft word but the actual shape of what Scripture says, with His Spirit keeping it from hardening back into the rule somebody handed you years ago.

The breakthrough

Something can go quiet and settle here, the way Ruth went quiet with her hand in the water, and it costs you nothing at all.

You are standing on ground that was never empty. Scripture has a man call a place the house of God at dawn on the strength of one night he had gone into with nothing, and the Holy Spirit is the one making that arrive as gladness now rather than as a fact about a patriarch.

Two things this is not. It is not the first move in anything, and there is no second move underneath it. And it is not a hint about what you have or what you can spare, because a spring under a field belongs to whoever is standing on the field, and if this dry year has left you with very little in hand, the water was never priced and never will be.

You have been His through every summer you were carrying, and the running never stopped for one single day of it. That is what is written, and His Spirit is the one who walked you up to the corner tonight.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing on your own floor. The standing to speak to God like this was given to you in Christ and is yours whether or not this was a good year, Scripture is the ground underneath it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brought you up to the corner under the thorn. What He does next in your circumstances is His to decide, and none of these lines is a lever.

  1. Top field I walked over forty years, you had water under you the whole time. The word of God has a man wake on a stone and say the Lord was in this place and he knew it not, and nobody fined him for the years he did not know. I am standing on ground that was never empty and I am saying so out loud.
  2. Shame about the summers I spent carrying, get off my back, because the spring was never once withheld from me. In the name of Jesus I put you down in the wet grass, since what is written gives a running man a promise instead of a reckoning. His Spirit is the one who keeps that from turning into a near miss in my head.
  3. Father, You were running clean and cold under that corner in every dry year I ever hauled a bucket up. Your word says You are not far from any one of us, and Your Spirit is the one who brought me back round to look. I know it now, and I am glad to say it where I can hear myself.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
