The Ledger Was Never Opened

The book is a red cash book from a stationers that closed in 2004 and it lives on the shelf above the workbench in Warrick's barn.

It is not a farm account. The farm accounts are done properly by a woman in town.

This one is his own, and nobody else has ever seen it, and what is in it is a record of every time anybody has done anything for him since about 1998.

Sixty-one bales, delivered by Ainsley when Warrick had shingles. Two days of a borrowed loader. A trailer axle. Four hundred pounds from his brother in the bad year, marked in and marked out again in 2011. Somebody's son who came and did the ditches for a week and would not take anything, and that entry has been open for eleven years and Warrick can tell you the exact date.

He would tell you it is just good manners. He would say a man should know what he owes.

His nephew Ford found the book in the spring, not snooping, looking for a fuse.

He read about two pages and then he sat down on a hay bale with it, and he was still sitting there when Warrick came in.

Ford said, "What is this?"

Warrick told him.

And Ford, who is twenty-six and blunt in the way that only comes from being fond of somebody, said: "Uncle Warrick, this is a list of every person who has ever loved you."

Warrick did not have an answer for that.

Ford said, "You have written down every kind thing anybody has ever done for you and you have put a number next to it."

They sat in that barn for a while. It was getting dark.

And then Ford said the thing that this article is built on. He said: "Do you think there's one of them wants paying?"

You may have a book too. It might not be a book. It might be a running total you could recite in about four seconds if somebody asked, and it might feel to you like decency rather than a burden, and the two are surprisingly hard to tell apart from inside. And nobody has ever sat down on a hay bale and asked you whether anybody on that list wants paying.

Wages And Gifts Are Different Words

There is a passage in Romans where Paul deliberately puts two commercial words side by side so that nobody can confuse them, and it is one of the sharpest things in the letter.

"Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness."Romans 4:4-5

Not of grace, but of debt.

He is saying: when a man works and gets paid, nobody calls the payment a kindness. It is a wage. It was owed. The employer is not being generous; he is settling an account that was opened by the work.

And then he says the other one is not like that at all.

You have been filing a gift under the wrong column your whole life. Romans 4 sets the wage and the gift beside each other precisely so the difference cannot be blurred, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes an argument written to a first century church and lands it on a hay bale in a barn at dusk.

And notice the phrase in the middle, because it is the one that would make a careful man put a red cash book down. To him that worketh not. That is not describing laziness. It is describing the position from which the thing is received, which is a position of no contribution at all, and Paul writes it that way on purpose because any contribution at all would reopen the account.

You were never in a position to make a payment toward this, and that is by design rather than by accident. That is what the written word says about how anybody is counted righteous, and it is the Spirit of God who takes twenty-seven years of a private ledger off a man in one page.

Nobody Is Opening An Account Here Either

Now let this page match what it is saying, because an article about a closed ledger that ends in a request would be the most dishonest thing on this website.

Nothing here asks you for anything. There is no figure in this article, no proportion, no percentage, no practice you are being enrolled in, no sign-up sheet, no membership, no commitment and nothing routed to any person, cause, church or work anywhere at all, this one included.

And if things are tight for you at the moment, there is nothing aimed at you sideways either. No small amount hinted at. No suggestion of time in place of money. No remark about what people in your position often find they can manage.

You are not an entry in anybody's book.

You have not incurred anything by being here. It is written that the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life, which puts the two words in the same sentence one final time so nobody can mistake which side anything sits on, and His Spirit is the one who has been in that barn with you every year the book stayed open.

And you are fully welcome today with an empty hand and a closed book, because a gift that opens an account is not a gift, and the Holy Spirit is the one keeping this page from doing the thing it is describing.
