The letter came at half eight in the morning and by twenty to nine Nadia had typed the message, attached the photo, selected all fourteen people, and then not sent it.
She sat on her bed with her thumb over the button for what she reckons was about two minutes, which does not sound like much and is an enormously long time to hold a thumb still.
The thing she could not get past was this. She had a strange impulse to say it to God first, and she did not trust the impulse at all.
That is worth explaining properly because a lot of people carry it. Nadia is sixteen and reads everything sideways and has a very well developed radar for people performing sincerity, mostly because she has watched a great deal of it online. And her immediate suspicion of her own impulse was: who is this for?
Nobody was in the room. Nobody would ever know either way. And she still could not work out whether saying it to God first would be a real thing or whether it would be her doing an impression of a person who says things to God first.
She said afterwards that she sat there running that loop for two minutes and got absolutely nowhere with it, and that what eventually happened was not that she solved it.
What happened was that she put the phone face down on the duvet, which she had not planned to do, and said, out loud, in a bedroom, "I got in."
Three words. And she said the loop just stopped, and that she still cannot tell you whether the impulse had been real, but that the three words definitely were, and that she thinks maybe that is how you find out.
She sent the message about forty seconds later. Fourteen people. Her best friend replied with eleven exclamation marks and a picture of a cat.
You may run the same loop. Any instinct toward God gets immediately inspected for authenticity, and the inspection never resolves, and you end up doing nothing at all because you cannot certify your own motives. And nobody has told you that you are not required to certify them, or that the way out of the loop is usually three words rather than an answer.

Whole Heart, Which Is Not The Same As Certified Heart
There is an opening line in the Psalms that a suspicious reader will immediately want to interrogate, and it survives the interrogation better than you would expect.
"I will praise thee, O LORD, with my whole heart; I will shew forth all thy marvellous works."Psalm 9:1
Whole heart. That phrase gets read as a purity standard, as though the psalmist is certifying that every fiber of his motivation has been audited and cleared. That is not what the phrase does anywhere else in Scripture, and it is not what it does here.
Whole heart means all of him is in it rather than part of him watching from the side. It is about the whole person turning up, and it is set against being half in, not against being imperfect.
You are not required to certify your own motives before you are allowed to open your mouth. Psalm 9 asks for the whole person rather than for a cleared one, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes an opening line of an ancient song and lands it in a sixteen year old on a duvet running an unwinnable loop.
And notice how ordinary the second half of it is. I will show forth all Your marvelous works. He is going to tell people. That is the same instinct Nadia had toward fourteen contacts, and Scripture puts it in the same breath as the praise without treating either as suspicious.
You have an instinct here that is older than your suspicion of it. That is what the written word does with gladness constantly, and it is the Spirit of God who is generally the actual source of an impulse a person cannot account for.
You Cannot Think Your Way Out Of That Loop
Now the honest part, and it is the reason this article exists.
The authenticity loop cannot be solved from inside itself. That is not a spiritual problem, it is a logical one. You cannot use your own motives to verify your own motives. Every check you run is run by the same equipment you are checking.
So the loop does not end with an answer. It ends with a sentence.
Nadia did not resolve whether her impulse was pure. She said three words out loud in a bedroom and the loop stopped mattering, which is not the same as being answered, and is much more useful.
And here is the part that ought to settle a suspicious reader: nobody is scoring it. There is no observer. If you say something to God and half of you is watching yourself say it and finding it slightly embarrassing, that is completely normal and it is not a failure of anything.
You are welcome to come with a heart that has not been through quality control. It is written that He knows our frame, which is a sentence about a God who is already fully briefed on what people are like, and His Spirit is the one who has been in the room through every one of those loops without once being put off.
And say the guard, because this is where a freeing thing turns into a standard. Nothing on this page is a requirement. No order, no words, no sincerity threshold, no proportion of anything, and nothing routed to any person or work anywhere, this one included. If you send the message and never say anything to God about it at all, you are exactly as much His when the replies come in, that is the written shape of it, and the Holy Spirit is the one keeping this off the shelf where standards go.
Something can stop looping here, in whatever room this has found you in, and it costs you nothing at all.
You are not being assessed on the purity of your own motives. Scripture asks for a whole heart rather than a certified one, and the Holy Spirit is the one making that read as an open door instead of as a clever reading of a psalm.
Two things this is not. It is not the beginning of a scheme and there is no second part underneath it. And it is not a rule about who to tell first, because Nadia sent the message forty seconds later to all fourteen and that was exactly right, and nobody anywhere is keeping a record of the order.
You have three words available and they will do, and nobody is marking them. That is written, and His Spirit is the one who has been in the room through every loop you have ever run.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, on your own, where nobody can hear you if that is easier. The standing to speak to God like this is yours in Christ and does not depend on your motives being clean, Scripture is the ground under it, and the Holy Spirit has been in the room through every loop. What He does next in your circumstances is His to decide, and none of these lines is a lever.
- Send button under my thumb, you were never the only place this could go first. The word of God says I will praise You with my whole heart and show forth all Your works, and whole means all of me turning up rather than all of me cleared. I am saying it out loud before I say it to anybody.
- Loop that asks who this is really for, get off my duvet, because I cannot audit my own motives with my own motives and I am not required to. In the name of Jesus I put you down face down beside the phone, since what is written says He knows my frame and is already fully briefed on what people are like. His Spirit has been in this room through every one of those loops without being put off once.
- Father, You were in this bedroom at half eight before the letter was even open. Your word says praise You with my whole heart, and Your Spirit is the one who got three words out of me when two minutes of thinking had got nowhere. I told You first, and I am glad to say so out loud.
