In the choir at St Anne's the note comes from Winnie, and it has come from Winnie since about 1994.
There is no piano. There has not been a working piano in that building since the roof went. So before every single thing they sing, Winnie, who is eighty-one and sits third from the end, opens her mouth and gives one note, and thirty-one people find themselves in it.
Priya joined in the spring. She is a good singer, properly trained, and for the first month she found the whole arrangement slightly ridiculous.
She said as much to the woman next to her, kindly, in the way you do when you think you are being helpful. Surely somebody should get an app. Surely you cannot run a choir off one lady's memory.
The woman next to her, who is called Dot, said: "You can if she's right."
The thing that got Priya was the second week of June. They were doing a piece she knew well and she came in a shade under, the way you do at the end of a long day, and she heard herself do it, and she heard the whole row around her not move an inch, and she came up into the note.
That is when she understood what she had been looking at.
Winnie is not the most important singer in that room. That is not what the note is for. Winnie is the reference. She is the thing everything else finds out about itself against. Priya did not learn that she was flat by consulting her own opinion. She learned it because a note was already in the air that had not come from her.
And here is what struck Priya afterwards, walking down to the parking lot in the light. Winnie giving the note takes nothing from anybody. Nobody sings less because Winnie sang first. Nobody is diminished by being in tune. The first voice does not consume the thirty-one; it makes the thirty-one possible.
She sat in the car for a bit before she drove off.
You have been hearing the word first as rank. As position. As somebody at the front of a line you are at the back of, and probably as somebody who is going to want something from you when you get there. And nobody has ever stood you in a choir loft and let you hear what the first voice is actually doing.

First Is A Reference, Not A Rank
There is a sentence in Colossians that gets read as a hierarchy and was written as an anchor point.
"And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence."Colossians 1:18
The beginning. The firstborn from the dead. And then that word preeminence, which people hear as being top of a list and which means, in the sense the sentence needs, being the one that everything else is measured from.
He is not first in the way a winner is first. He is first in the way a note is first. Everything after Him finds out what it actually is by being held next to Him.
You are already tuning to something, whether or not you ever chose it. Colossians 1 puts Christ at the reference point of the entire arrangement before anybody in the room opens their mouth, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a phrase from an ancient letter and lets a person actually hear the pitch they have been singing against.
And this is why the oldest picture of the first in Scripture works the way it does. A farmer brings the earliest fruit up in a basket, and the fruit is not important because it is the best fruit. It is important because it tells the truth about the field. It is the note. The rest of the harvest finds out what it is by being held next to it.
You have been measured against Christ and found to be His, and that finding was done before you knew there was a measurement. That is what the written word says about how anybody comes to belong at all, and it is the Spirit of God who makes that arrive as being held rather than as being judged.
Nobody Sings Less Because Somebody Sang First
Now the part that gets people, and it got Priya in a parking lot.
Giving the note costs the choir nothing. Not one singer in that room has less voice because Winnie went first. The note does not come out of them. It comes to them, and everything they do afterwards is more, not less, for having it.
Which is the exact answer to the fear underneath this whole subject. When people hear first, they hear subtraction. Something coming off the top. A portion, a percentage, a slice, a demand. And the picture Scripture actually gives is a note in the air that makes thirty-one people able to sing together instead of thirty-one people all being separately, sincerely, slightly wrong.
You were not diminished by anything God did first. It is written that of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, so acknowledging the reference point is agreeing with the room rather than surrendering to it, and His Spirit is the one who is holding the note steady while you find it.
And hear the guard, because this is the seam where a beautiful thing turns into a heavy one. Nothing on this page asks you for anything. No amount is named, no proportion, no practice, no membership, and nothing goes anywhere at all, this work included. You are as fully His standing there flat and tired as you are singing it perfectly, and that is the written shape of it, with the Holy Spirit as the one who keeps this from setting into a rule while you are reading it.
Something can come up into pitch here, quietly, the way a voice does at the end of a long day, and it costs you nothing at all.
You have not been standing at the back of a line. Scripture never once puts a believer in a line behind Christ waiting to be dealt with, and the Holy Spirit is the one making that read as belonging rather than as a nice thought about a first century letter.
Two things this is not. It is not step one of a scheme and there is nothing further down this page that turns the note into a bill. And it is not a suggestion about what you have or can spare, because tuning is free and always was, and a person with nothing in their hands finds the note exactly as easily as anybody else in that row.
You are in a room where the pitch was given before you arrived, and you were never asked to invent it. That is what is written, and His Spirit is the one holding it in the air for you tonight.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud where you can hear yourself. The standing to speak to God like this is yours in Christ and was never a rank you climbed to, Scripture is the ground underneath it, and the Holy Spirit is the one holding the note steady while you say it. What He does next in your circumstances is His to decide, and none of these lines is a lever.
- Note I have been trying to invent, you were given to me before I opened my mouth. The word of God says Christ is the beginning and has the preeminence in all things, so the pitch was in this room a long time before I walked into it. I am singing what was already in the air.
- Fear that going first means something is coming off the top of me, get out of this loft, because nobody in here sings less for the note being given. In the name of Jesus I put you down between the pews, since what is written has all things holding together in Him and never once has Him taking a slice. His Spirit is the one holding the pitch while I say it.
- Father, You gave the note before there was a choir in the building to hear it. Your word says that in all things Christ has the preeminence, and Your Spirit is the one who let me hear how far under I was without shaming me for it. Everything tunes to You, and I am glad to say it out loud.
