The Night It Was Decided

Trina got out of the flats on Ashmore Row at twenty past one in the morning with her son on her hip and one shoe.

That is the whole inventory. One shoe, a boy of four, and a phone that had eleven percent on it. Everything else was still up there on the fifth floor and was going to stay there.

The community center took them in. Somebody found her a fleece. Somebody else found juice for Kofi, and a woman she had never met sat on the floor with him and played a clapping game for an hour and a half so that Trina could sit on a plastic chair by the radiator and shake.

Three years later, Trina runs the Thursday kitchen at that same center. Sixty covers, mostly older people, some of them the ones who came down the stairs that night in bathrobes.

And on a Thursday last spring somebody new came in and, in the way people do when they are trying to be encouraging, said something to her about giving God the first of everything.

Trina smiled and got on with the rice. But it sat in her all evening, and after the last of them had gone she stood in that kitchen with the lights half off and the dishwasher roaring, and she said it out loud, to herself, in an empty hall.

"First. Everybody wants the first of something."

That is what the word had come to mean for her. A charge. Something taken off the top before you have even got your hands round it. And she was tired that night, and the tiredness said what tiredness says, which was: I got out of that building with one shoe, and now there is a first as well.

She sat down on the counter with a dish towel in her lap, and the hall was dark past the serving hatch, and she thought about a night three years back when a woman she did not know had sat on a floor and played a clapping game with her son for an hour and a half.

You have heard the word first the way Trina heard it. As a charge. As a thing that arrives before you are ready and comes off the top of whatever you have managed to hold on to. And in all that time, nobody has taken you back to the night the word actually got its meaning.

The Word Got Its Meaning On A Night Somebody Came And Got Them

Here is where the first was defined in Scripture, and it was not defined in a treasury.

A people had been in it for four hundred years. Bricks. Quotas. Sons in the river. And on one night, one single night, God went through and got them out, and every household in that nation woke up on the other side of a thing they could never have done for themselves.

And then, in the morning after, this is what He says.

"Sanctify unto me all the firstborn, whatsoever openeth the womb among the children of Israel, both of man and of beast: it is mine."Exodus 13:2

Look at the last two words. It is mine. Not: it is owed. Not: send it in. Not: this is the fee for the rescue. It is mine, spoken by the One who had just walked through a country in the dark and come out the other side carrying a whole people.

You have been reading the word first off an invoice, and it was written on the far side of a rescue. Exodus 13 puts that sentence the morning after the getting out and never once presents it as a charge, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a line from an ancient dawn and lands it in a woman sitting on a counter with a dish towel.

The first, in that story, is not a portion. It is a marker. Every firstborn in that nation was a walking reminder of a night when nobody was going to make it and everybody did. The first says: remember whose hands you came out in.

You were being described that night, not billed. The written word puts the rescue before the sentence and the sentence after the rescue every single time it does this, and it is the Spirit of God who takes that order and makes it land in the chest rather than in the head.

What It Costs To Say Whose You Are

Now the plain part, and Trina found it before I did.

Saying whose you are takes nothing off you. It is not a transfer. She could stand in that kitchen and say out loud that she came out of Ashmore Row in somebody else's hands, and the saying of it would not remove one single thing from her. She would still have the Thursday kitchen. She would still have Kofi, who is seven now and loud. Nothing goes out of the room when the truth gets said in it.

That is why God asked for a sentence and not a shipment. He owns the field and the fire and the flats and the hour. What He wanted was people standing upright saying out loud where they came out from, because a thing said out loud does something in the person saying it that a thing merely known never does.

You have the standing to say it tonight without preparing anything at all. It is written that you did not choose Him, He chose you, and that puts the whole sequence on His side of the door, with the Holy Spirit as the one who brings your own rescue back to mind while your hands are in the sink.

And say the guard clearly, because this is the exact seam where a good word turns into a heavy one. Nothing on this page asks you for anything. No figure, no proportion, no practice, no schedule, and nothing routed to any person, cause or work anywhere, this one included. You are no less His if you never say a word of this out loud, because that is not what has been holding you, and the same Spirit who got you this far is not now going to start charging admission.
