The Story Before The Basket

This message is for the grandson made to say where the family came from before every meal, who thinks it is a tax on his hunger and finds out it is the only reason the table means anything

In that house nobody eats until Mateo has said it, and Mateo is eleven and has been saying it since he was six, and he is heartily sick of it.

It is not a prayer. That comes after, and it is short, and everybody likes it. This is the other thing. Before anybody picks anything up, the youngest at the table has to say where the family came from.

There is a set way. His abuela taught it to him with her hands on his shoulders. Your great grandfather came from a village with a name you can say and a road you can find. He came with a canvas bag and a coat. He worked at the docks and then at the yard, and he did not eat properly for two years so that there would be somebody at a table like this one.

Eleven words at a time and then a breath. That is how she taught it.

And every Sunday of his life Mateo has stood up in front of nine to fourteen people, depending on who is over, and said it while the food goes cold.

Last month he had had enough, and he said so on the way home in the car, in the way an eleven year old does, which is at the ceiling and slightly too loud. Why do we have to. Everybody already knows it. It is not even his story, it is a story about a man he never met.

His mother let it run all the way out. Then she pulled in on the hill above the marina and turned the engine off.

She said: your abuela's older brother is not in the story. He did not get on the boat. There was one place and one bag and their mother chose, and the reason there was a place at all is that a man at that dock did a thing for somebody he did not know.

She said: you say it so that the table means something. If nobody says it, this is just food.

Mateo did not answer. He sat in a parked car above a marina at eleven years old and did the sum, and he got it wrong, the way you do at eleven, and then a week later he got it right.

The story is not a tax on his hunger. The story is what turns a plate of food into a place at a table.

You have been handed a requirement without a reason, in this whole subject, for years. Somebody told you what was expected, or implied it hard enough that you worked the figure out yourself, and nobody ever pulled over on a hill and told you what the words at the start of a meal are actually for.

The Story Before The Basket

The Oldest Ceremony About The First Is A Story

Here is the thing almost nobody is told about the first in Scripture. There is a ceremony for it, it is written out in full, and most of it is a man talking.

A farmer takes the earliest fruit of his ground and puts it in a basket and carries it up to the place where God has put His name. So far it looks like a delivery. Then he has to open his mouth, and what he says is not about farming.

"And thou shalt speak and say before the LORD thy God, A Syrian ready to perish was my father, and he went down into Egypt, and sojourned there with a few, and became there a nation, great, mighty, and populous."Deuteronomy 26:5

A Syrian ready to perish was my father. That is how the oldest ceremony about the first begins. Not with a figure. With a great grandfather who nearly did not make it.

You are looking at a ceremony whose main event is a sentence, and the basket is only there so the sentence has something to be said over. Deuteronomy 26 gives the recital more lines than it gives the produce, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes that ancient arrangement and lands it in a kitchen where somebody has been told what they owe and never once told where they came from.

And the recital keeps going. It goes through the hard years, and the crying out, and God hearing it, and the strong hand, and the ground. Only at the very end, after all of that, is there one line about the basket at all.

You have been handed a history and never a bill, and the order of that ceremony is the proof. That is what the written word says the first was actually for, and it is the Spirit of God who takes a farmer's speech from three thousand years back and makes it change the temperature of a Sunday table.

Nothing Left The Table When The Story Got Told

Now the part Mateo worked out on the second week, and it is the whole thing.

When he says where the family came from, nothing goes off the table. Not a plate. Not a spoonful. The food is exactly the food it was. What changes is that the people sitting round it know what they are sitting in.

That is what acknowledgment costs, which is nothing, and what acknowledgment does, which is everything. God does not need the fruit. He owns the ground and the rain and the man and the basket. What He asked for was a person standing upright and saying out loud where a life came from, because a thing said out loud does something in the sayer that a thing merely known never does.

You have the standing to say it at your own table tonight without preparing anything. It is written that from Him and through Him and to Him are all things, so every true naming is agreement rather than a proposal, and the Holy Spirit is usually the one who brings the origin of something to mind while a person is carrying plates.

And here is the guard, because this exact seam is where a beautiful thing turns into a heavy one, and this family has watched it happen to other families. Nothing on this page asks you for anything. No figure, no proportion, no schedule, no practice you are being enrolled in, and nothing routed to any person or cause or work anywhere at all. You are as fully His at a bare table as at a full one, that is the written shape of it, and His Spirit is the one keeping this off the ground where rules grow.

The breakthrough

Something can settle here, the way an eleven year old settles a week after an argument, and it costs you nothing to let it.

You are not sitting at that table on credit. Scripture has the oldest ceremony about the first spending most of its words on a story and almost none on the fruit, and the Holy Spirit is the one making that arrive as a place laid for you rather than as an interesting fact about Deuteronomy.

Two things this is not. It is not the opening of a scheme, and there is nothing further down that turns the story into a charge. And it is not a hint about what is on your table, because the recital in Deuteronomy 26 begins with a man who was ready to perish and owned nothing at all, and if the plate in front of you is thin this evening the words are exactly as true and exactly as yours.

You have come from somewhere, and Somebody carried you all the way here. That is written, and His Spirit is the one who pulled the car over on the hill tonight.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud at your own table if you can. The standing to speak to God like this was given to you in Christ and is not a matter of what is on the table tonight, Scripture is the ground under it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brought the story back to you. What He does next in your circumstances is His to decide, and none of these lines is a lever.

  1. Table I have sat at all my life, you were laid by hands that came a long way to lay you. The word of God has a man stand up with a basket and say a Syrian ready to perish was my father, and there is more of that recital about the crossing than about the fruit. I am saying where I came from before I pick anything up.
  2. Weariness with words I have said a hundred times, get off my shoulders, because the telling is what turns food into a place at a table. In the name of Jesus I put you down beside my chair, since what is written spends its lines on a history and never once on a figure. His Spirit is the one who brings the origin back to me while I am carrying plates.
  3. Father, You carried a family across water so that there would be somebody sitting here tonight. Your word says all things are from You and through You, and Your Spirit is the one who pulled me over on the hill and made me listen. I know where we came from, and I am glad to say it out loud.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
