The Chair By The Door

This message is for the daughter who comes in last from every shift to a house that has already eaten, and who has begun to feel like an afterthought in her own family without anybody meaning it

Marisol comes in at about twenty to eleven and the house has eaten at seven, which is how it has been since she went onto the late shift nineteen months ago.

She is not resentful. She wants that on the record because people assume it. Her family are good and they wait up in shifts and somebody is always still awake, and her brother has never once let her wash a single dish.

It is more specific than resentment. It is that a house has a rhythm and hers is now half a beat outside of it. The stories she hears are second hand. Somebody says something at the table on a Sunday and everybody laughs and she laughs a beat late because she is working out the context.

And the thing that started it, she says, was a Tuesday when she came in and there were six chairs in the front room and she counted them, because the front room chairs get carried through when there are people over, and she had not known there were people over.

Nobody hid it from her. She had been told. She had forgotten because she had worked a double.

But she stood in that hallway at twenty to eleven counting six chairs and something in her went quietly flat, and she carried it around for about a month.

Her grandfather noticed. Grandfathers do.

He did not say anything about it. What he did was move a chair.

It is a plain wooden one from the kitchen and he put it in the hallway by the coat hooks, and it stays there now, and on the seat of it there is a folded blanket, and on the table beside it there is a covered plate.

She said, "Abuelo, why is there a chair in the hall?"

And he said, without any weight on it at all: "So that you can sit down before you have to be anybody."

She said she sat down in it that night with her coat still on and did not move for four minutes.

You may come in last as well. From a shift, from a hospital, from a second job, from a day that ran over and over. And there may be nothing wrong with the people in your house at all and you may still be half a beat outside the rhythm of it. And nobody has put a chair by the door for you and told you what it is for.

The Chair By The Door

The Psalm Talks To The Soul Like Somebody Coming In

There is a line in a psalm where a man addresses his own soul in the way you would speak to somebody coming through a door.

"Return unto thy rest, O my soul; for the LORD hath dealt bountifully with thee."Psalm 116:7

Return unto thy rest.

Return is a homecoming word. You cannot return to somewhere you have never been. The whole sentence assumes a place that already belongs to the person being spoken to, and the instruction is simply to go back to it.

That psalm is written by somebody who has been through something bad. It says so a few lines earlier, in plain language about death and sorrow. This is not a man with an easy life telling his soul to relax. It is a man who has been out in it, coming back in.

You have a rest that is already yours to return to rather than one you have to earn your way into. Psalm 116 uses homecoming language and never once uses the language of a reward, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a returning man's sentence and puts it beside a plain wooden chair in a hallway at twenty to eleven.

And look at the reason attached. For the Lord has dealt bountifully with thee. The reason to sit down is not that the work is finished. It is that Somebody has been generous. The rest is grounded in what has already been given rather than in what has been completed.

You were dealt with bountifully before you got home, and the chair was put out before you came in. That is what the written word says about rest every time it raises it, and it is the Spirit of God who turns that from a sentence into something a person can actually sit down in.

Being Last Is Not Being An Afterthought

Now the part this article is for, and it needs saying carefully because nobody has done anything wrong in this house.

There is a particular ache in being outside the rhythm of a place you belong to. It is not exclusion. It is worse in a way, because exclusion you could name, and this you cannot, and if you tried to say it out loud it would sound like an accusation against people who love you.

So people carry it silently. The one who comes in last carries it silently for months and often for years.

And the thing that answers it is almost never a conversation. It is a chair. It is somebody arranging the physical world so that the last person in has somewhere to be before they have to be anybody.

You are not an afterthought in your own house. It is written that He sets the solitary in families, which is a sentence about deliberate placement rather than about accident, and His Spirit is the one who has been in that hallway at twenty to eleven every night of the nineteen months.

And say the guard, because this is where a kind word can become one more job. Nothing on this page asks anything of you. No conversation you have to have, no gratitude you have to produce, no schedule, no proportion of anything, and nothing routed to any person or work anywhere. If you come in tomorrow and go straight up the stairs, you are exactly as much His on the landing, that is the written shape of it, and the Holy Spirit is the one keeping this from becoming another thing to manage.

The breakthrough

Something can go down here, in a hallway or on a stair, and it costs you nothing at all.

You have somewhere to come back to that was arranged before you arrived. Scripture uses homecoming language about rest and grounds it in generosity that has already happened, and the Holy Spirit is the one making that read as a chair rather than as a nice line from a psalm.

Two things this is not. It is not the start of a scheme and there is no second part beyond it. And it is not a promise that the shift schedule changes, because Marisol is still on lates and the house still eats at seven, and what God does in your circumstances is His to decide.

You have been dealt with bountifully, and the chair by the door has been out the whole time. That is written, and His Spirit is the one who has been in that hallway every single night.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, sitting in a chair. The standing to speak to God like this is yours in Christ and does not depend on what time you got in, Scripture is the ground under it, and the Holy Spirit has been in that hallway at twenty to eleven every night. What He does next in your circumstances is His to decide, and none of these lines is a lever.

  1. Hallway I come into after everybody has eaten, you were never proof that I am an afterthought. The word of God says return unto thy rest, O my soul, and return is a homecoming word for a place that already belongs to me. I am sitting down in the chair that was put out for me.
  2. Flatness I have carried since I counted six chairs in a front room, get out of this hall, because nobody in this house has ever once put me second. In the name of Jesus I put you down by the coat hooks, since what is written says He sets the solitary in families, which is deliberate placement and not an accident. His Spirit has been standing in this hallway every night of the nineteen months.
  3. Father, You had this chair out before I came through the door at twenty to eleven. Your word says the Lord has dealt bountifully with thee, which is why I get to sit down and not because the work is finished. I return unto my rest, and I am glad to say so out loud.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
