The Ledger That Left Out The Rain

This message is for the man who kept a notebook of every hour he put into a piece of ground, and who has to face that the column which actually grew the food was never written down at all

Wiremu kept the notebook because of something his brother in law said at a barbecue in the first year, and he is not proud of that.

What his brother in law said was that the community garden was a hobby. He said it lightly and he meant it lightly and Wiremu smiled and turned the sausages, and then he went home and bought a hard backed notebook and started writing down the hours.

Six years of it. Date on the left, hours in the middle, what he did on the right. Dug the far bed, three and a half. Sorted the water butt, two. Netting, one and a quarter. Weeded between the rows in the rain, forty minutes, which he still wrote down.

By the sixth summer it came to just over eleven hundred hours and it was, by any measure, a real number.

The trouble started when his niece Ariana came to help, because Ariana is nineteen and doing environmental science and asks questions in the way people do at nineteen, without any idea of what they are opening.

She looked at the notebook while she was eating a tomato off the vine and said, "Where's the rain in this?"

He said there was no column for the rain.

She said, and she was not being clever, she genuinely wanted to know: "How much rain fell on this bit of ground in six years?"

They worked it out on the back step that evening, roughly, with her phone. The plot is ten meters by twelve. Six years of average rainfall on that area comes to something over eight hundred thousand liters of water.

Wiremu looked at that number, and then at his notebook, and did not say anything for a long moment.

Eleven hundred hours of a man with a spade. Eight hundred thousand liters of water he did not carry, arriving on a schedule he did not set, at a temperature he did not choose, followed by the light, which he had also not organized, and the soil, which took ten thousand years to make and which he had contributed exactly nothing to.

And here is the thing he said to Ariana afterwards, sitting on that step, and it is the reason this article exists.

He said: "It is not that my hours were nothing. It is that I made a list with only the small column on it, and then I went and felt behind for six years."

You have kept the same notebook. Somewhere along the way you started measuring your life by the column you can write down, the hours, the effort, the things you got right and the ones you did not, and nobody has ever sat on the step with you and asked where the rain is in this.

The Ledger That Left Out The Rain

The Column That Was Never On The List

There is a verse in the middle of the longest weather report in the Bible, which is what Psalm 104 mostly is, and it puts the whole community garden in one line.

"He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man: that he may bring forth food out of the earth."Psalm 104:14

He causeth the grass to grow. Not helps it. Not blesses the effort of the one who grows it. Causes it, in a psalm that spends its whole length on springs and hills and the moon knowing its seasons, none of which anybody in the audience had built.

You have been keeping accounts on a plot where the main contributor never once sent in a figure. Psalm 104 puts the growing itself on God's side of the page, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes an old hymn about weather and makes it land in a man on a back step with a hard backed notebook.

And this is what the oldest picture of the first is for. A farmer carries a basket of the earliest fruit to the place where God has put His name, and the sentence he says over it is not about how hard he worked. It is: this ground, which You gave me. That is a man adding the missing column back in, out loud, holding the evidence in both hands.

You were given the rain, the light, the soil and the years, and none of it appeared because somebody worked hard enough. That is what the written word says, plainly and repeatedly, and it is the Spirit of God who turns a fact like that from a demotion into a straightening of the back.

Naming It Does Not Take The Spade Out Of Your Hand

Now the part that has to be said carefully, because there is a real wound near it.

If you have been told your whole life that your work does not count, or you come from people whose work was measured by somebody else and always came out short, then a page telling you the rain did more than the spade can land like one more person taking something off you.

So hear it precisely. Wiremu's eleven hundred hours were real. Ariana never suggested otherwise and neither does Psalm 104. The soil does not turn itself over. Nobody nets a bed from heaven.

What changed on that step is not that his work shrank. It is that he stopped being alone in the calculation.

You are not the only one who has been working that ground. It is written that we are laborers together with God, which is a sentence with both columns in it, and His Spirit is the one who is standing that up in you rather than knocking anything down.

And say the guard out loud, because a good thing hardens exactly here. Nothing on this page asks you for anything. No amount is named, no proportion, no practice, no schedule, nothing routed to any person, cause or work, this one included. You are as fully His with a bad harvest as a good one, that is the written shape of it, and the Holy Spirit is the one keeping this from turning into another list you can fall behind on.

The breakthrough

Something can straighten here, the way a back straightens on a step in the evening, and it costs you nothing at all.

You have never been carrying this alone, and the arithmetic you have been doing since that barbecue was missing its largest number. Scripture puts the growing, the rain and the light on God's side without ever once canceling the spade, and the Holy Spirit is the one making that read as company rather than as a correction.

Two things this is not. It is not the first step of a scheme, and there is no second step further down the page. And it is not a comment on your yield, because eight hundred thousand liters fell on that plot in the years the tomatoes failed as well as the years they did not, and if this season has been thin, the rain still came and the psalm still reads the same.

You have been standing on ground that has been worked over by Somebody else the whole time you were writing down your own hours. That is written, and His Spirit is the one who sat you down on the step tonight.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, sitting down if that is easier. The standing to speak to God like this was given to you in Christ rather than earned in hours, Scripture is the ground under it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who asked you where the rain was in your list. What He does next in your circumstances is His to decide, and none of these lines is a lever.

  1. Notebook of hours I kept for six years, you were never the reason anything came up. The word of God says He causes the grass to grow and brings food out of the earth, and there was no column in you for eight hundred thousand liters of rain. I am writing the missing side back in out loud.
  2. Feeling of being behind that I have carried since a barbecue, get off this step, because the biggest number was never mine to produce. In the name of Jesus I put you down beside the water butt, since what is written calls us laborers together with God and never once calls me the only one working. His Spirit is the one straightening my back while I say it.
  3. Father, You sent the rain on a schedule I did not set and the light I never organized and the soil that took ten thousand years. Your word says You cause the growing, and Your Spirit is the one who made me look at the right column tonight. The rain was Yours, and I am glad to say so out loud.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
