Whose Fence Line Is It

This message is for the man who has defended a boundary for nineteen years and finds out from an old map that the whole valley belonged to somebody else long before either fence went in

There is a fence on the ridge above Chalk Bottom that Roy Merrick has replaced twice with his own hands and defended for nineteen years, and until the second Tuesday of October he could have told you every post in it.

The argument was with the Pooles, and it was over about eleven feet.

Nineteen years is a long time for eleven feet. It had started as a proper row and then settled down into the sort of thing two families do at a market without ever quite looking at each other. Roy's father had put the original line in, in 1961, off a hedge that is not there any more, and Roy had inherited both the fence and the certainty.

Then the county archive digitized the old parish maps and a girl from the records office rang up about something else entirely and mentioned, in passing, that there was a survey from 1843 with the whole valley on it.

Roy drove down. He was not going to, and then he was in the truck.

They spread it on a table. It was beautiful, actually, the copperplate and the little wash of color, and Roy found Chalk Bottom without any help at all because the shape of a valley does not change.

And there was no line at all where his fence is. Not on the Pooles' side. Not on his. The whole of the top, both sides of the ridge, everything he had been arguing about, was one parcel, colored one color, under one name, and the name was not Merrick and it was not Poole.

He sat back in a plastic chair in a records office and did not say anything for a while.

It was not that the fence was wrong, exactly. Fences are fences. It was that he had spent nineteen years of his life defending a line drawn by his father off a hedge that had been grubbed out in the seventies, on ground that had been under somebody else's name a hundred and eighteen years before his father was born, and the ground itself had never at any point been in question.

He drove home the long way, up over the ridge, and stopped at the gate and got out and looked at the whole valley in the light.

"Nineteen years," he said, out loud, to nobody, "and I never once asked whose hill it was."

You have been defending a line too. Somewhere along the way the subject of God and what is His turned into a boundary dispute in your chest, a question of how much they are going to take, and in all those years nobody has ever put the old survey down on a table in front of you and let you find the shape of the valley.

Whose Fence Line Is It

The Survey Underneath All The Fences

There is a line in the Psalms that people sing without hearing, the way you drive past your own gate.

"The earth is the LORD'S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein."Psalm 24:1

Read it as a survey rather than as poetry. The earth. The fullness of it, which means not just the dirt but the crop and the water and the timber and the weather. And they that dwell therein, which means the people, which means the man on the ridge with the map, which means you.

That is not a claim being lodged. A claim is what you file when ownership is in doubt. This is a statement of a title that predates every post anybody has ever driven into a hill.

You are living on ground that was never in dispute, and the argument you have been having was never about the deeds. Psalm 24 puts the whole parcel under one name before a single fence in your life went in, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a line people sing on a Sunday and turns it into a man sitting down in a plastic chair.

And this is exactly why the oldest picture of the first is what it is. A farmer brings a basket of the earliest fruit up to the place where God has put His name, and the words he says over it are not a transfer. He says: this ground, which You gave me. He is agreeing with a survey, out loud, holding the evidence.

You have been handed the whole valley rather than billed for eleven feet. That is what is written from the first page onward, and it is the Spirit of God who takes an ancient deed and makes it read as room to breathe instead of as fine print.

Agreement Is Not Surrender

Here is where a man's shoulders come up, and it is worth naming.

When you hear that something is not yours, everything in you gets ready to lose it. That is what nineteen years of a boundary dispute does. So the moment somebody says the hill is God's, a good, hard-working, self-respecting person hears an eviction coming.

But look at what actually happened to Roy. Nobody took the farm. Nobody moved the fence. He walked out of that office owning exactly what he owned when he walked in. What changed was that he stopped defending a line as if the whole valley depended on it, and a man who is not defending a line has an enormous amount of himself back.

That is the difference between agreement and surrender. Surrender is losing something you had. Agreement is finding out what the situation always was and putting your weight down on it.

You were never going to lose the farm by naming who owns the hill. The written word never once takes ground off a person for acknowledging where it came from, and His Spirit is the one who unclenches a hand that has been holding a post for two decades.

And say the guard out loud, because this is where a good thing goes bad. Nothing on this page is a demand. No figure, no fraction, no schedule, no practice you are being signed up to, and there is nothing at all routed to anybody, this work included. You are as fully His standing at that gate as you would be after any act somebody could put on the end of this, and that is the written shape of it, with the Holy Spirit keeping it from setting back into the rule you were handed years ago.

The breakthrough

Something can come off your shoulders here, the way it came off Roy's at that gate, and it costs you nothing to let it go.

You have not been in a boundary dispute with God. Scripture files no claim against you and never has, and it is the Holy Spirit rather than a change of mood who is making that read as good news instead of as a technicality about an old psalm.

Two things this is not. It is not the first move in a scheme and there is no second move under it. And it is not a suggestion about your land, your work or your money: nothing here asks you for anything at all, and if the year has been thin, the survey reads exactly the same, because the fullness of the earth was never measured against what is currently in your yard.

You were on His ground before your father put the first post in, and you are on it this evening. That is what is written, and His Spirit is the one who drove you up the long way to look at the valley.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing on your own ground. The standing to speak to God like this belongs to you in Christ and was never something you fenced off and earned, Scripture is the survey underneath it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who put the map on the table today. What He does next in your circumstances is His to decide, and none of these lines is a lever.

  1. Fence line I have defended nineteen years, you were never the edge of what is mine. The word of God says the earth and the fullness of it belong to the Lord, and that survey was filed a long time before my father came off that hedge. I am standing on ground that was never in dispute.
  2. Dread of being evicted from my own life, get off this ridge, because agreeing with a title deed has never taken one acre off anybody. In the name of Jesus I put you down at the gate, since what is written never once fines a man for naming who owns the hill. His Spirit is the one prising my hand off the post while I say it.
  3. Father, You held this whole valley under one name before there was a Merrick or a Poole or a hedge to measure from. Your word says the world and everyone living in it is Yours, and Your Spirit is the one who drove me the long way round to see it. The fullness of it is Yours, and I am glad to say so out loud.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
